From the President

Hi all and welcome to the new year after such a successful end of last year.

For those that came in late, we had an amazing end to the year and beginning of 2008 with:

·         Curtin Primary winning the Girls Primary ACF Australian Schools Title

·         Hawker Primary winning the Open Primary ACF Australian Schools Title

·         Daramalan placing third in the Girls Secondary ACF Australian Schools Title

·         Alfred Deakin winning the Years 7-9 Chesskids National Schools Tournament

·         Junta Ikeda is the U18 National Champion for the 2008 Australian Juniors

·         Yi Yuan is the U14 National Champion for the 2008 Australian Juniors

·         Megan Setiabudi is the U14 Girls National Champion for the 2008 Australian Juniors

·         In the Lightning, Junta (U18) and Emma Guo (G/U16) won titles

·         In the Rapid Play, Junta (U18), Yi (U16), and Emma (G/U14) also won titles.

Congratulations to the players listed above. Additionally in 2007 we had record numbers of players turning up for events and Junior chess in the ACT continues to grow. This is primarily thanks to the players who attend the events and the group of dedicated parents who volunteer their time to run the ACTJCL. To all of you who assisted in 2007 thanks and to those backing up for 2008 you also have my thanks. Lets have a fun year.

- Charles Bishop

2008 Australian Juniors

The 2008 Australian Junior Chess Championships were held from the 13th to 25th January at Cranbrook High School in Bellevue Hill, Sydney. There were 168 players altogether from all States and the ACT (no players from NT) in 4 different sections, the Under 18 Open (81 players), Under 18 Girls (13 players), Under 12 Open (55 players) and Under 12 Girls (19 players). There were 17 players from the ACT altogether - 7 in the Under 18 Open, 3 in the Under 18 Girls, 6 in the Under 12 Open and 1 player in the Under 12 Girls.

Here is a list of the achievement of the ACT players:

Australian Junior Championships:
1st in Under 18 Division: Junta Ikeda
1st in Under 14 Division: Yi Yuan
1st in Under 14 Girls Division: Megan Setiabudi

Australian Junior Rapid-Play Championships:
1st in Under 18 Division: Junta Ikeda
1st in Under 16 Division: Yi Yuan
1st in Under 14 Girls Division: Emma Guo

Australian Junior Lightning Championships:
1st in Under 18 Division: Junta Ikeda
1st in Under 16 Girls Division: Emma Guo

Australian Junior Problem Solving Championships:
1st in Under 18 Girls Division: Emma Guo
1st in Under 16 Division: Allen Setiabudi (scoring 100%)
1st in Under 14 Division: Yi Yuan (scoring 100%)
1st in Under 14 Girls Division: Megan Setiabudi

Full results can be found in Bulletin No.11 of the tournament (
here) [Click "Bulletin" on the right hand side]

Additionally, Junta won the main tournament of 11 Rounds with 10 wins and 1 draw. This means he is the first Junior Champion to equal the feat of IM David Smerdon back in 1999 at the Junior Championships at Hervey Bay. Junta also took part in the Rapid-Play and Lightning, winning with scores of 6.5/7 and 11/11 respectively. Therefore, Junta was undefeated, scoring 27 wins and 2 draws out of the 29 games he played during the entire Championships - in fact, he is the first Junior Champion ever to win the three titles at the same time in the Australian Junior Championships! Well done, Junta.

Note: There is a "Champion's message" on Page 5 of Bulletin No.11 written by Junta, which is worth a read with some great words of encouragement for junior players (and parents).

Development Squad

Development Squad is starting again on the 6th of April this year. Entries are open to all players who are showing a strong commitment to their sport. This usually means that you are playing tournaments with the ACTJCL regularly and attend regular coaching beyond school clubs. Applications for Development Squad will be distributed from the 11th of February with decisions on the final Squad made after the Autumn Weekender tournament. Players who are seeking selection for development squad are expected to play the Autumn Weekender.

Committee Positions

The ACTJCL continues to gradually spread our volunteer base to ensure that no high level of workload falls on any one person. Our first committee meeting will be before the Lightning Tournament on the 24th of February. For 2008, we are currently looking for the following additional parental support:

·         Secretary

·         Webmaster to take over from Jifu & Mike

·         Grant application writing

Please contact Charles at ceb@o2c.com.au or on 02 6231 6428 if you are interested in helping out with any of the positions or would like to find out more information.

Doeberl Cup & Dubbo Open

Doeberl Cup

Information and entry + payment details for Australia's largest chess tournament held at the Hellenic Club over Easter can now be viewed (here). This year, there is an additional U1200 two day 6 round (60m+10s) tournament designed specifically for our younger players who feel the four day U1600 minor tournament is too big a commitment. To our juniors who want to play in the Premier (FIDE or ACF over 1800), there are limited spaces left in the tournament, so make sure you get in early.

Dubbo Open
This year, the Dubbo Open is being held on the first weekend of the school holidays (12th & 13th of April). The ACTJCL is proposing to take a bus up with a group of players, so we need an indication of numbers so that we can determine what the cost per head may be. The activity will include three nights accommodation (Friday to Sunday) and the costs for the bus and fuel. We will seek to have an adult management ratio of about one adult to five players. Could interested players please send an email to Charles at
ceb@o2c.com.au, so that we can determine how many may be interested.
