2007 Autumn Junior Weekender Championships & Reserves
Firstly, a big thank you must go to Jenny Mason and Agus Setiabudi for all their work at the tournament. Without their efforts, and those of other parents who gave up their time, these events would simply not have happened.
All in all, the behaviour and the attitude of the players were of a high standard. It was only on the very odd occasion that obscure thoughts of hot irons and boiling oil began to cross the minds of the organisers of the tournament. Even then, the temperatures of those desirable control implements were way below optimum.
Now for the (more important) congratulations part.
Championships
1st Yi Yuan
2nd Justin Chow
3rd Allan Setiabudi
Championship Primary Shield went to James Li.
Biggest Upset was achieved by Yijun Zhang.
1st U1200 Player was won by Andrew Farley.
Reserves
1st Peter Bradshaw
2nd Angus Gruen
3rd Alice Kristofferson
First Unrated Player Prize was won by Aidan Pianca.
Encouragement Award was earned by Victor Alubale.
The Rising Star was achieved with a fine performance by Gregory Rostov.
Normally, no comments are made on individual games, mainly due to the fact that there are too many to observe. However, the end-game of one did catch the organisers eyes - that of Marat Rostov vs. Joshua Walker. The result is not relevant (except, of course, to the players and, probably, their parents) but it sparkled due to both players being fully focused and fighting for their position on the board. If there was a certificate for “Most Enjoyable Game”, that game would win it. Well done both players.
Jim Flood (A big thank you must also go to Jim! - Ed.)
Full results and crosstable are at the end of the Bulletin.

2007 Development Squad
+++ APPLICATIONS WILL CLOSE TOMORROW! (Wednesday 21st March) +++
The Development Squad attends eight monthly sessions each year, with the first session to take place on the 15th April. Sessions run from 10:00am to 4:30pm at Campbell High School (unless advised otherwise). There will be a minimum of 3 hours coaching in small ability-based groups at each session, and a mix of play, analysis and competition for the remainder of the day.
Applications are welcome from any active junior player in the ACT, provided they are an ACTJCL member and currently playing chess on a weekly basis at an ACTJCL club (Norths, Souths, Tuggeranong or Gungahlin) or at an ACTCA club (Belconnen, Canberra or Tuggeranong). Additionally, all applicants must have a record of participating in ACTJCL tournaments, as well as a parent/carer prepared to assist with the running of at least one event in 2007.
There are only 36 spots in this program this year, so get your applications in quick! The cost this year will be $150, payable in two installments. Applications will close on Wednesday 21st March, and selections will be announced by the end of March. The form needs to be completed IN FULL, and no late or verbal applications will be accepted. Applications can be handed in at ACTJCL events; handed to Jeremy (Norths) Libby (Souths) or Shaun (Tuggeranong); posted to ACTJCL C/-56 Allchin Circuit Kambah ACT 2902; or made by email to ceb@o2c.com.au
For more information, please visit our website (with full details and application form): http://www.actjcl.org.au/actjcl/
(CORRECTIONS) - The Norths Junior Chess Club runs on FRIDAY, not Thursday, as misprinted on the online document. Also, attendance at the Gungahlin Junior Chess Club has been approved to be included in the Chess Activities column, and will be updated shortly.
Any other enquiries should be directed to Charles Bishop (ceb@o2c.com.au) or 0414 485 132.

GM Shipov Lecture & Simul
GM Sergei Shipov will be conducting a short lecture and simul in Canberra very soon. GM Shipov is the top seed in the Sydney International Open to be held in Parramatta after Easter (more info in the next Bulletin).

Lecture: Starts 12 noon, for half an hour
Simul: Starts 1:00pm

2007 World Junior Championships, World Youth Championships & World Youth Olympiad
Applications are now open for the upcoming World Junior/Asian Junior/Team events. Brett Tindall from the Sydney Academy Of Chess has set up a webpage with the application form for all the events at:
http://www.sydneyacademyofchess.com.au/wjapplication.htm
There are many different age groups so have a look and see if you are eligible to apply for them and if not, think perhaps of setting them as a goal for you to aim for by the end of this year. If you are going to register, make sure you ask your parents before you send in an application! (It may also be a good idea to ask your club coach or club organizer)

Private Coaching
Hi I’m Simon Mitchell. I currently coach at the Souths Club but you may have seen me at the Aus. Juniors where I was an arbiter, and became known among some of the younger more impressionable players as the second tallest man in the world. I’m happy to coach anyone rated around 400-1000. For more information, please contact me on 0434 056 088 or email me at simon1mitchell@hotmail.com.
*Why take on a private coach?* - It’s really no different to your private lessons in music, tennis or ballet. One-on-one is a great way to learn, particularly if you have a good rapport with your teacher and really want to kick your game along. A coach will be able to analyze your games and spot your strengths and weaknesses. You (or your mum and dad) might see your losses as the result of careless play or lack of thought, whereas your coach may spot a gap in your knowledge of an opening line, or a tactical weakness, or inexperience in the endgame which can be easily remedied with some well planned lessons and a little homework practice. Not everyone needs the "best coach" or the "best player" as their coach - please don't base your choice on rating alone (we have lots of good, older juniors who are very capable coaches for younger players). Make sure you find someone who has a great rapport with your child, prepares a lesson for your child (not just a generic lesson trotted out to all students) and don't be afraid to change coaches if things aren't working out or if your child (and they do!) catches up to their coach!
ACTJCL does not promote or endorse individual coaches. All we do is provide the names of people interested in coaching. We do not provide names unless we know players to have sufficient understanding of the game, but schools & parents are expected to use their own procedures to vet candidates.
