2008 Autumn Junior Weekender & U1000
The best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men, Gang aft agley (Robert Burns 1759 - 1796)
The timing of these tournaments was set by the Committee last year after carefully looking at the calendar with a view to avoiding the Canberra Day holiday. Sadly, the ACT Government decided to ignore our superb planning by bring forward the Canberra Day holiday scheduled for the 17th of March to the 10th. So, for the 38 players who decided to participate in a chess competition over two days rather than spending three days lolling about down the coast, well done.
Congratulations also to those players who participated for the first time and who had to learn how to record moves. It was pleasing to see some of the more experienced players in the U1000’s assisting their opponent in recording moves but I noted with some amusement that they made sure that their opponent was using their time on the clock. They may be young but they give nothing away!
There were some grand performances as you can see from the results. And you can rest assured that I had nothing to do with one of the awards. Trust me.
A big thank you to all the helpers over these two days including Mark Kethro, Charles Bishop, Agus Setiabudi, Carol Skinner and, Libby Smith, who displayed her usual patience (yes, folks, she is patient) in teaching tyros, such as myself, some of the essentials needed to run these competitions.
Turning to the Winners and the Awards - the Standings and Cross Tables are attached as two separate files:
Autumn Weekender:
1st : Allen Setiabudi (Perpetual Shield Champion as well)
2nd: Sathya Chitturi
3rd: Alana Chibnall
Rating Group A (U1200): Joshua Bishop
Rating Group B (U1000): Van Nguyen
Biggest Upset: Megan Setiabudi
Primary School Perpetual Shield: Megan Setiabudi
U1000 Weekender:
1st: Yi-Ying Zeng
2nd: Willis Lo
3rd: Stuart Mason
1st Unrated: Matthew Bennett
Top Debut: Walter Wolffs
Rising Star: Amy Flood
Hope to see you around the boards soon - especially in the U1200 division at the Doeberl Cup (check out the web-site www.doeberlcup.com.au) If you have played in the Weekender, you can surely play in this forthcoming tournament.
Jim Flood

National Junior Mailing List
A National Junior Mailing List is currently being planned for juniors, coaches, parents and interested people. It is envisaged that it will be used for distributing information on events such as overseas selections, ERGAS selections, etc. Initially, it will also be used as a discussion mechanism for concepts such as the need for a national body to deal with junior affairs (AusJCL).
Can interested people please send their e-mail address to: jenni@stratagemcc.com.au

***Important Notice - Reinforcing some Rules at a Chess Club***
• ACTJCL Junior Clubs are for chess players. Children at the Clubs are expected to participate in chess-related activity for the two hours they attend.
• Games that involve running around the venue, climbing on furniture or harassing other participants have nothing to do with chess and children who would rather engage in this behaviour will be asked to leave the Club.
• The chess games should never involve interference or comment from a third party (not even a best friend). Comments that intimidate or humiliate another participant may result in a suspension from the Club.
• ALL children have a right to enjoy playing chess, irrespective of age, race, religion, skill or gender. Children are encouraged to talk to the organiser if there are any problems with the behaviour of other participants.
• Children are encouraged to bring bottled water (no sticky drinks) to drink but we ask that they eat before coming along to the Club. Food can be an unwelcome distraction and also creates unnecessary tidying up for our organisers.
• ACTJCL has an appropriate level of public liability insurance in the event of any accidents. Although chess itself has very little chance of causing illness or injury to participants, when accidents occur, they are most often the result of silly or inappropriate behaviour by the children themselves. Parents should warn children of the risk to themselves, to others and to property, of impulsive, wilful, or disobedient behaviour. Extreme or repeated inappropriate behaviour will result in suspension or expulsion from ACTJCL activities.
URGENT: We are looking for a High School, College, Uni or an adult chess player who is interested in coaching on a permanent basis at the Souths Junior Chess Club. No previous experience is required. If you are interested, and would like more information, please contact Miona Ikeda (miona-ikeda@hotmail.com).

Private Coaching
Hi, my name is Endre Ambrus.
I have been a professional chess player for more than 10 years (1991 - 2002), mostly playing in European tournaments such as the Romanian Super League. My current rating is 2378, although I have reached 2407 while I was playing in Russia.
I would like to start chess coaching, at the charge for $30 an hour. It would be preferable if there are 2-3 people per coaching session, as this makes more profoundly preparation possible during 2-3 hours for $30 from each person for this time.
Should you be interested, please contact me at endre.ambrus@gmail.com or on 0413 198 044.

Hi, my name is Andras Toth. I am an International Master from Hungary. I have been working with a number of pupils including a few of the best ACT juniors for more than a year. I am looking to expend my involvement in ACT coaching and have room in my schedule for more private pupils. I am also available for teaching school groups on a term by term basis.
If you are interested, please feel free to contact me.

Hi, my name is Shaun Press.

There will probably be 1-2 groups consisting of 4-6 students (ages between 8 and 14 years). If you are interested please contact me at Shaun.Press@apex.net.au to discuss suitable times etc.

*Why take on a private coach?* - It’s really no different to your private lessons in music, tennis or ballet. One-on-one is a great way to learn, particularly if you have a good rapport with your teacher and really want to kick your game along. A coach will be able to analyze your games and spot your strengths and weaknesses. You (or your mum and dad) might see your losses as the result of careless play or lack of thought, whereas your coach may spot a gap in your knowledge of an opening line, or a tactical weakness, or inexperience in the endgame which can be easily remedied with some well planned lessons and a little homework practice.
Not everyone needs the "best coach" or the "best player" as their coach - please don't base your choice on rating alone (we have lots of good, older juniors who are very capable coaches for younger players). Make sure you find someone who has a great rapport with your child, prepares a lesson for your child (not just a generic lesson trotted out to all students) and don't be afraid to change coaches if things aren't working out or if your child (and they do!) catches up to their coach!
Note: ACTJCL does not promote or endorse individual coaches. All we do is provide the names of people interested in coaching. We do not provide names unless we know players to have sufficient understanding of the game, but schools & parents are expected to use their own procedures to vet candidates.

Doeberl Cup
Information and entry + payment details for Australia's largest chess tournament held at the Hellenic Club over Easter can now be viewed (here). This year, there is an additional U1200 two day 6 round (60m+10s) tournament designed specifically for our younger players who feel the four day U1600 minor tournament is too big a commitment. To our juniors who want to play in the Premier (FIDE or ACF over 1800), there are limited spaces left in the tournament, so make sure you get in early.
Also, if there are any players playing in the Doeberl Cup who may be able to offer billets for titled players playing in the Premier over Easter (billeting would be probably required from Thursday 20th until Monday 24th). We only have one request from IM George Xie at the moment, however, we may receive others in the coming weeks.
Should you be have any queries, please contact Charles Bishop at ceb@o2c.com.au or 0414 485 132.

Dubbo Open
This year, the Dubbo Open is being held on the first weekend of the school holidays (12th & 13th of April). The ACTJCL is proposing to take a bus up with a group of players, so we need an indication of numbers so that we can determine what the cost per head may be. The activity will include three night’s accommodation (Friday to Sunday) and the costs for the bus and fuel. We will seek to have an adult management ratio of about one adult to five players. Could interested players please send an email to Charles at ceb@o2c.com.au before the 21st March, so that we can determine how many may be interested.
Current applicants are:
Joshua Bishop
Alana Chibnall
Jo Mason
Stu Mason
