Special thank you to the Shadwell family for setting up, packing up, taking scores, writing ribbons, looking for lost property, registering players, helping with lunch and doing absolutely anything I asked and helping out (in many respects) before I even had a chance to ask! It was a long day with eighty-four participants. We did have more registered but had the usual drop-out factor on the day. This was neatly balanced by those who arrived without pre-registering (a habit, we announced on the day, that couldn't continue with such large numbers and with many venues not big enough to accommodate this sort of crowd). We lost one player before the start of play (overwhelmed by the prospect of playing) and another after round 2. One or two others pulled out before the end of the day which is not unusual with very young children and some unrealistic expectations. Some may notice one or two anomalies on the final standings when comparing them with the standings on the afternoon of the competition. A result or two was disputed at the end of the day and I have adjusted the contentious results to the advantage of both players. This altered the ranking of some players but did not affect our prizewinners. On the lower boards it was unfortunately (too often) the case that children sat down with the nearest opponent, rather than the correct one. This was often picked up before play began, or the draw manually altered when games had been completed, but a review of the results has made me aware that we didn't catch them all. Having generated so much interest in our events we will have to ensure we have some extra (experienced) hands on deck for events of this size where we have so many inexperienced participants! However a good day seems to have been had by the overwhelming majority of participants. Children from 24 schools participated, making this not only a success in terms of the number of players, but in the broader distribution of our tournament information.
