LATEST NEWS

2008 Australian Juniors

The 2008 Australian Junior Chess Championships were held from the 13th to 25th January at Cranbrook High School in Bellevue Hill, Sydney. There were 168 players altogether from all States and the ACT (no players from NT) in 4 different sections, the Under 18 Open (81 players), Under 18 Girls (13 players), Under 12 Open (55 players) and Under 12 Girls (19 players). There were 17 players from the ACT altogether - 7 in the Under 18 Open, 3 in the Under 18 Girls, 6 in the Under 12 Open and 1 player in the Under 12 Girls.

Here is a list of the achievement of the ACT players:

Australian Junior Championships:
1st in Under 18 Division: Junta Ikeda
1st in Under 14 Division: Yi Yuan
1st in Under 14 Girls Division: Megan Setiabudi

Australian Junior Rapid-Play Championships:

1st in Under 14 Girls Division: Emma Guo

Australian Junior Lightning Championships:

1st in Under 16 Girls Division: Emma Guo

Australian Junior Problem Solving Championships:

1st in Under 14 Division: Yi Yuan (scoring 100%)
1st in Under 14 Girls Division: Megan Setiabudi

Full results can be found in Bulletin No.11 of the tournament (
here) [Click "Bulletin" on the right hand side]

Additionally, Junta won the main tournament of 11 Rounds with 10 wins and 1 draw. This means he is the first Junior Champion to equal the feat of IM David Smerdon back in 1999 at the Junior Championships at Hervey Bay. Junta also took part in the Rapid-Play and Lightning, winning with scores of 6.5/7 and 11/11 respectively. Therefore, Junta was undefeated, scoring 27 wins and 2 draws out of the 29 games he played during the entire Championships - in fact, he is the first Junior Champion ever to win the three titles at the same time in the Australian Junior Championships! Well done, Junta.

Note: There is a "Champion's message" on Page 5 of Bulletin No.11 written by Junta, which is worth a read with some great words of encouragement for junior players (and parents).
